Why Breastfeeding Meditations?

Meditation is a beautiful practice that we can use to cultivate presence. Through meditation, we nourish our minds, bodies and souls. Our presence is a gift to give to everyone we encounter, including our children.

Breastfeeding is a beautiful practice that we can use to nourish our babies. There is much more than physical nourishment involved with breastfeeding. We are engaged at every level, and as we nurse our babies, they soak up all that we have to give.

By combining these two practices, we can deepen our presence and the way we give to our babies.

In my experience, breastfeeding can sometimes be challenging. There have been times when I have been in great pain as I nursed my baby. It has been through cultivating presence that I have continued through these times. Sometimes all that was needed was for me to entirely focus on my breath, and allow the moment to be.

I am so honoured to breastfeed my baby. I intend to be entirely present with her as I nurse. I do not want my mind to be elsewhere, whether it is on a conversation I heard yesterday, a post I saw on Facebook, or a job on my list of things to do. I need to be here, now.

I believe that every thought and feeling I have while I nurse are given to my baby along with my milk. She receives it all. So my intention is to give her my highest thoughts and my highest feelings.

Breastfeeding meditations are a way of combining these two beautiful practices, and creating something truly wonderful.

Breastfeeding with presence honours the sacredness of mother and child in the holy act of giving milk. Breastfeeding becomes a prayer.

Amen.
